Thirsty Down There? How Dehydration, Stress and Medication Impacts Your Vaginal Health

A woman can suffer from vaginal dryness for many reasons.  But two reasons that are constantly pointed at are: age and hormones.  This is especially true in the US because the intimate care industry caters to women's insecurities about their body and aging.  Most all media here focuses on being 'young and beautiful' and that spills over into the intimate care market.

The U.S. has one of the largest markets for intimate body care products, including douches, vaginal deodorants, lubricants, and beautification procedures. The market for feminine hygiene products alone was valued at over $6 billion in 2023, and this includes a wide variety of intimate care products.

The FDA has expressed concerns about some vaginal health products and procedures, like vaginal rejuvenation and certain vaginal hygiene products, due to their potential harm. However, despite warnings, these products are still widely advertised, showing the powerful influence of the marketplace in the U.S.

Here are 5 other areas that could be causing your vaginal dryness that have nothing to do with your age or your hormones.

Medications: Certain medications, like antihistamines, antidepressants, and some birth control pills, can cause dryness as a side effect by reducing natural lubrication.

Stress and Anxiety: High levels of stress or anxiety can lead to a decrease in libido and natural vaginal lubrication, affecting overall sexual health.

Dehydration: Inadequate water intake can impact the body’s ability to maintain moisture, including vaginal lubrication.

Allergic Reactions: Sensitivities or allergies to soaps, detergents, or personal care products can irritate the vaginal area and lead to dryness.

Autoimmune Disorders: Conditions like Sjögren's syndrome, which causes dryness in various parts of the body, can also lead to vaginal dryness.

Vaginal dryness during sex could lead to micro tears leaving you susceptible to STIs, bacterial vaginitis and other ways that could through off your entire flora system.  There are, however, natural ways to increase your 'juices down there'!  Check out my previous post on the Top 5 Natural Ways To Get Your Juices back - No Lube Required
